Which search engine should you be using? Opodo, Kayak, Expedia, Ryanair, Last Minute, etc? The list literally goes on and on.

A couple of things to keep in mind....
Where exactly is the airport?
Check the location of the actual airport. For example, Ryanair ‘suggest’ that their Rues and Girona Airports are Barcelona airports. Reus Airport is actually about 120km or an hour and a half south of Barcelona while Girona is about 90km and just over an hour north from the city centre.
Do your flight times correspond with hotel check in and check out?
Plan your flights in accordance with your hotel’s check in and out times. You could save yourself a lot of headache and pointless ambling about if you do this. For example, if your flight arrives at 5am what will you do until you are able to check into your hotel at 3pm? Many hotels in Spain let you leave your bags if you have a reservation for later that day, but not all do so double check.
The same holds true if you have a late departure and an early check out from your hotel. Be sensible, especially if you are travelling with little ones and remember that sometimes paying a little extra for more convenient flight times is 100% worth it.
Do your flight times correspond with car hire pick-up and drop-off?
Not only should you make sure that your flight times coincide with your hotel, but also with your Spain car hire pick-up and drop-off. It is worth a call to see when you can collect your car if you have a very early or late arrival and also upon departure you may opt to use a key drop if it is possible and convenient to you. Double check.
